Prayer- It Doesn’t Work that Way

July 15, 2013

Most people believe that their prayers are limited to those formal times when they specifically bow their heads and address God directly. It doesn’t work that way!

Below is a conversation where a wise little old lady helps a business woman see the reality of her prayers.

“Okay, about how many hours a day was your focus on your products, employees and customers?”

“Almost every waking hour was geared to that end. At least 12-16 hours every day.”

“And how many hours per day would you say you spent venting?

“Well, just guessing? I’d say I spent about 15 minutes lashing out and expressing my woes angrily to God. That’s about all the energy I had left after working such long hours.”

I paused, once again reflecting on the pain I was able to pack into those sessions. Then I added, “So….. that would be one fourth of an hour per day.”

Another pause …………… “Okay “Okay! I get it.

You’re saying that my focus was at least 50-1 on producing a good product to yelling at God …Wow!”

I was really kind of shocked by my revelation. In my mind, I spent all my time being angry, but in reality, she was right.

“I’m not really in tune with the prayer part here, but I sure understand the math. And if I go back to the idea of what you focus on expands that you have been telling me about, I guess it really does ring true here.”

“See Angela, we are always praying.  Our every thought, action and attitude is telling God what we really want in our lives.

 Your life IS your prayer!”

“Can’t you see it?   The life you lead, where you put your energy, is your most prevalent prayer. And certainly a life focused on producing the best products and dedicated to caring for the welfare of your employees was a prayer that was continually answered.  Everything you are telling me, about your employee calling you, about blindly going where the problems were… Well, they were both answers to the prayer that the largest part of your life had become.

Your prayers were always being answered. You have always been taken care of. You just haven’t been able to see it. Because you did not realize you were getting exactly what you were asking for.

The more energy, the more attention you put into anything, the more powerful connection there is to God’s help.  And you are never more than a breath away from it.

The Perfect Career – Guaranteed!

July 13, 2013

Before you seek contentment in any other career, it is important to realize that your most important work is to be happy, contented, grateful and generous.

When you master these standards as your first priority, you will succeed at anything you choose to do. Without these, nothing you choose to do in life will feel like real success in the end.

Here are a few guidelines to help you get there.

Take time to count your blessings. By daily focusing on what is ‘right in your world’,  you automatically attract more good into your life.

What you focus on expands.

Quiet the voices in your head that say you’re not good enough, not smart enough, or any other defeatist balderdash.  Drown them out with positive thoughts and affirmations.

Surround yourself with upbeat people. Your mind will have the additional source of input that will help keep you on track.

Focus on the negative, you attract more to you.

Focus on the positive and your life improves.

Give of yourself to things you feel passionate about. Let the simple joy of giving be your intent. Have no concern for getting something in return.  When you are generous with your time and talents, it creates a space that must be filled.

Focus on giving and the Universe gives back to you in surprising and wonderful ways.

As you keep all these things in mind, make strides toward what you desire.  That movement forward demonstrates what is important to you. It is another powerful form of focus.

The result? True Success in life and career.

Who are Your Fab Five?

July 12, 2013

The people you hang around with can tell you a great deal about your life. In fact, they are the main indicators of it.

Good, bad, or ugly, your family will always be your family. Ya gotta love um. But outside your family, you have a lot to say about those you spend time with. So, are you choosing wisely?

Take a minute to run the numbers. Assess how well your ‘Fab Five’ are in alignment with the person you are wanting to be.

1.  List the 5 people, outside of immediate family, that you spend the most time with.

2.  Next to each name, put the number between 1 and 10 (10 being the highest) that best matches the quality of that person’s life.

3.  Determine the average. The resulting number is probably just about where you stand at this time.

Do you want to bring your number up? It’s not that hard. Start making small strides by spending more time in uplifting situations and with uplifting people.  Before too long you’ll see positive changes in your own number.

I Need an Expert

July 10, 2013

Do you ever find yourself saying that?  Feeling inadequate seems to be a part of life for most of us. But truly, our thoughts betray us.

That’s one reason I wrote my first book, The Baglady’s Guide to Elegant Living.  In it, a little old lady helps a young woman find “the expert within”. Ever since then, readers longingly tell me that they want a ‘Baglady’ of their own… Someone to love them through the process.

You may need a guide to aid you in finding your internal ‘expert.’ It needs to be someone who specifically leads you back to yourself, NOT someone to be it for you!

Don’t worry that you feel inadequate now. It took me a long time looking outside before I finally learned to go within.  So, don’t feel alone in your thoughts.  Our whole lives we have been taught to refer to experts outside, so it takes some time to learn to trust your own instincts and inner guidance.

Just determine to uncover the ‘expert’ that is you! It is a totally transforming experience.

Follow your own heart. It will never lead you astray.

Planting Forgiveness

July 6, 2013

Several years ago, I had a really big issue. Six close business associates turned their backs on me. These people had been my friends and I felt extremely betrayed. Even then I knew the power of forgiveness but, I just couldn’t do it. Because I couldn’t forgive, I couldn’t move forward. So I had an inner struggle going on as well.

I’ve spoken about the fact that making a habit takes about 21days. And…. I sure needed to change my bad habit of focusing on my hurt. So I lined up 6 mugs in my kitchen window and planted a tiny plant in each one, knowing that it would take a good deal of attention to make them grow. And… that it would take at least 21 days.

The first day I forced myself pray for blessings for those 6 people. Each day after that I associated my love and good wishes for the health of each person’s plant with good thoughts toward the person that plant represented.

The plants flourished and my forgiveness and ability to move ahead also happened.  6 weeks later, spring had arrived and I planted them in my garden where they remain all these years later. And you know, even to this day, when I see them out there, I lovingly remember their association to those six people.

Balancing the Laws

July 5, 2013

Truly successful people operate in accordance with the Natural Laws on a consistent basis. You may have heard of the Law of Attraction. It is one of them.

The natural laws by which the world operates are as real as gravity. The problem is, they cannot be seen with the eyes. There are many references both secular and religious.. Here are some well known biblical references.

“Seek and you will find.”

“Pray without ceasing.”

“You reap what you sow.”

They aren’t just “good ideas”, as one might think. They are the premises by which the universe operates.  We do not take them seriously enough.

If you were to take only these three with the same belief you give to the law of gravity, you would have amazing transformation in your career, relationships, and finances.

Balance your implementation of the natural laws. Operate according to them, and your life will magically fall into place.

Challenging your Beliefs

July 4, 2013

Every one of us grew up with a set of beliefs. Many times they were passed down from one generation to another. Certain words meant certain things, but were the representations really true? In some cases, perception is far from reality.

Sometimes it can take cathartic events to call our previously held views into question.

Being as I live in Kansas, a state well publicized for its tornados, I was thrilled when I moved into my house. It had a basement.

We’ve had lots of tornado activity in our area over the 3 years I’ve lived here, and I’ve retreated to the basement on several occasions. However, nothing had ever come close enough to really get scary. That is,  until my town was in the path of what they call a ‘straight line wind’ of almost 100 miles per hour (Hurricane force winds). I was roused from sleep by the ferocious storm at about 6am. Soon after, the electricity went out, so I grabbed my flashlight and retreated to the safety of my basement.

NOT!

As shingles and siding were thrown against the outside of the house, for the first time, there was a real danger. And, in the event of a tornado, a REAL basement might have saved me. However, as I sat in the dark, it suddenly dawned on me that my basement is only 2 feet underground. The entrance to my home is high above the ground. When you open the door from the first floor and step down, it certainly seems like you’re descending deep into the earth. But the first floor is about 6 feet above the ground. So, 8 feet down is actually only 2 ft. below ground.

It turns out that my basement is the perfect depth to protect the inhabitants of Lilliput. A mouse or a squirrel might be safe, but this is no kind of shelter for a human being.

A creepy feeling came over me at that moment as the town outside was ravaged. I took up a spot under the stairwell and prayed for the best. Then I marveled at how a person can be totally oblivious to the real truth about a situation even though it’s been right there in front of them all along.

This basement story is just a small example of how deceived we can be by our long held perceptions.

So how can you tell that it’s time to rethink some important aspects of your life? Ask yourself this question.  Are you truly happy and empowered by the percepts with which you live your life? If not, it’s time to latch onto a new way of thinking.

Change, Glorious Change

July 2, 2013

While many people balk at change, I love it. In fact, when there is not enough change in my life, I get complacent and feel like life is standing still.

Over the last couple days, I’ve totally moved out of one part of my huge house and into the other half. It’s given me a chance to shake things up a bit.

Look at all the great things that have happened just from that change.

  1. I’ve rediscovered many things that I’d completely forgotten that I had.
  2. In rediscovering my high school yearbook and looking at my 17 year old self on the pages, I noticed how much my physical appearance had changed.
  3. In that change I also became more grateful  for the fact that I’m much wiser and more contented. So what if there a wrinkles. I’ve come to love myself as I am.

Back to the move and the positive aspects of that change, I am invigorated by putting my life back together in a new way. I’ve cleaned out the old and started anew in a fresh office, looking out on a new balcony.

Shake your life up now and then. It’s a boost to your creativity.

Ah! The glory of change.

Growing Money Trees

April 26, 2013

Have you ever had someone say to you “Money doesn’t grow on trees?”

I know my parents used to say that to me when I wanted the latest new outfit or needed money to go to the city pool.

You know, how we personally feel about money is transferred, through our consciousness, directly to our children. Yikes!

Of course we have budgets to keep in mind and certainly keeping the kids spending habits in check is important. But, how about a new and more positive twist on the old money stories?

Instead of telling them, in essence, that you ‘can’t afford it’, help them to develop their creativity with a different word pattern.

Try statements like these.

“How could we find the money to get that new outfit?”

“What can you do to earn what you need to go to the the movies this weekend?”

Helping put a personal value on what your children want is a win-win for both of you. It inspires creativity, teaches them some personal accountability and shows them how to build their own ‘Money Tree’ from the ground – up.

Recognizing the Gifts

April 25, 2013

Isn’t it true? Most of us live our lives forward and understand the meaning of them only when looking back.

While I was spending years railing at God for keeping me trapped in a life I hated, he was giving me multiple avenues out. I didn’t notice. I was too busy being sure that it was going to look a certain way. My way.

In my mind, when I exited my living hell, I would be debt-free, all my facilities leases would be at their ends, and all my company’s ongoing catalog contracts would be completed. On top of that, I would have a nice nest egg and my employees would all be perfectly taken care of.

Immediately this reminds me of the saying, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.”

Now in the retrospect of my mind, He wasn’t laughing. God was just looking at me with compassion, moving His head gently back and forth thinking, “Dina, Dina, Dina…”

It took a long time. I got the ball bat to the head over and over because I was so dense as to not see all the gifts that were being laid at my feet; gifts I walked over as if they were nothing… because the wrapping paper was all wrong.

To use the gift analogy, I was so sure that my gift would be wrapped in red paper with gold ribbon. Instead, I was continually given beautiful royal blue packages with metallic silver ribbon. Because they looked so different, I kept refusing to accept them.  And all along, the blue box was the answer to my dreams.

Now looking back, I can see that the Universe had a much better plan all along, but I was blinded by my own ideas.

I’m smarter now, my experience has taught me to change.  I have learned to live life consciously while moving forward, accepting all my gifts as I go.
